What is the New Grease Spec?

The National Grease Lubricating Institute (NLGI) has issued new High Performance Multiuse (HPM) grease specifications.

The Water Resistant (WR) specification has three characteristics:

  • Water Washout –HPM+WR will reduce the amount of grease that can be lost when subjected to water from 10% to 5%.
  • Water Spray Resistance – This is a more severe test and the was not included in the original CG-LB or the core HPM specifications.
  • Roll Stability – This specification uses a modification of the HPM test as it measures the grease performance in the presence of water.
Mobil has conducted extensive testing against these specifications and has determined that the Mobilgrease XHP 220 Series meets these standards. Attached please find the Product Data Sheet for Mobilgrease XHP 220.

Low Temperature (LT) products must meet the following specifications:

  • Torque – HPM+LT will include low temperature starting and running torque tests. This test measures how the grease prevents component rotation at a certain temperature.
  • Mobility – This test was developed by the steel industry and measures how fast a grease will travel under established conditions.
  • Flow Pressure – This is a test that also measures mobility, but under different conditions that the test noted above.
Years of field experience and laboratory testing has shown that Mobilith SHC greases meet these standards. Attached please find the Product Data Sheet for Mobilith SHC.

The High Load (HL) products must meet the following specifications:

  • Wear Characteristics –HPM+HL lowers the four-ball wear scar diameter from 0.60 mm in the core HPM to 0.50 mm.
  • Extreme Pressure – This specification uses a modern technique that was not available for the original CG-LB nor was included in the core HPM specification.
  • Fretting – This specification was included after discussion with end users. This test was not included in the HPM core spec.
Years of field experience and laboratory testing has shown that Mobil Arapen RB grease meets these standards. Attached please find the Product Data Sheet for Mobil Arapen RB.
