Skin Irritation from Metalworking Fluids

One of the most common complaints when using metalworking fluids is skin irritation, or contact irritant dermatitis. This condition results in dry, scaly inflamed skin because the fluid has removed the natural oils on your skin. These oils help retain water in your skin and when it is removed, the water evaporates from you skin, causing the issues noted above. The high pH of the fluids is the culprit, so avoiding contact with the fluid is a great way to avoid dermatitis.
Bacteria itself will not cause dermatitis, but can make it worse. Here are a few things you can do to prevent dermatitis:

  1. Follow recommended PPE procedures
  2. Monitor coolant concentration to make sure it is not too high
  3. Reduce metal fines in the fluid that could cut hands and arms
  4. Keep the work area clean

Dermatitis can be more than a nuisance and should be addressed immediately. The steps shown above can be great first measures to avoid skin issues. Ensuring a safe working environment is good business. Reducing workplace incidents contributes to improved productivity and this goes straight to the bottom line.
