Talk to my son about having to change the channel on a TV and his eyes will glaze over. Landline phones are becoming a thing of the past. We’re even talking about space tourism. OK, vinyl might be making a comeback, but really? The point is everything evolves. In the commercial vehicle market, these evolutions have reduced diesel fuel consumption by 2.9 billion gallons, particulate matter by 218,000 tons and CO2 by 29 million tons in the last ten years. Peel
back the numbers and you will see cost savings and improved operational efficiency.

The key to a fleet realizing these benefits is to understand your vehicle. New transmissions cost up to $20,000 and require specific fluids to meet OEM recommendations. Automatic transmissions generate a lot of heat while automated manual transmissions need fluids with copper corrosion to protect electronic components. Smooth shifting is a must, and this places more demands on the fluids. One size does not fit all and the fluids from ten years ago are not going to cut it.

If your truck is operating in a city with a lot of stop and go driving, it will drive slower than a long-haul semi and this will make the fluids run hot. For these applications, maximum oxidation protection ensures that you can maintain optimal drain intervals prevent premature component wear. TO highlight the application difference, transmission drain intervals for long haulers can be 500,000 miles compared to 50,000 with a mining operation.

GE's New Specification Demands New Lubricants

Turbine OEM’s are designing their units to improve efficiency and this will require lubricant manufacturers to keep pace. GE has introduced a new energy efficient turbine oil specification, GEK 121603. Jenbacher realized that their turbines could withstand extended oil life cycles and reduce life cycle costs. Mobil has worked with GE and Jenbacher to develop…

Skin Irritation from Metalworking Fluids

One of the most common complaints when using metalworking fluids is skin irritation, or contact irritant dermatitis. This condition results in dry, scaly inflamed skin because the fluid has removed the natural oils on your skin. These oils help retain water in your skin and when it is removed, the water evaporates from you skin,…
